CELEBRITY BEAUTY SECRETS
Michelle Harris
We all want to look our best, but for celebrities who are always under the microscope, it's a necessity. Thanks to new advances in nutrition, supplementation, and science, we can keep our skin looking great as we age, without the risks and expense of plastic surgery.
Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to insure radiant skin. What we've heard for years still rings true: Beauty comes from the inside. This is why it makes so much sense (yet so few of us do it) to drink our 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. The average adult body is about 60 percent water. If you want your complexion to appear dewy and fresh, then you need that water intake! Always keep a bottle of water on hand, even when doing something as simple as running errands. You can find anything from sports waters that contain electrolytes, to mildly flavored waters, to waters that contain added nutrients. Because of the myriad of choices available, with a little effort you should be able to get enough water and resist the temptation to drink soft drinks. Plus, did you know that most soft drinks can actually dehydrate you? Without question, water is your best beverage bet.
Dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad, author of the book, Wrinkle Free Forever, knows what it takes to keep skin glowing. According to Dr. Murad, whose celebrity client list boasts Calista Flockhart, Lucy Liu, Cheryl Tiegs, and Brooke Shields, " The skin is the largest, most visible organ in the human body, and it reflects the aging processes, including water loss, that occur throughout the body."
One of the newest trends in Hollywood is to get skin looking great from the inside through supplementation. Supplements, such as those containing essential oils and antioxidants, can increase skin hydration. Damage from free radicals, along with inflammation, is associated with skin damage, disease, and overall aging. Supplements containing antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, beta carotene, green tea and coenzyme Q-10 are excellent at helping to destroy free radicals, giving skin a younger looking appearance. I take an assortment of supplements every day as part of my health and beauty regimen. Look for the right combination of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids specifically designed for the benefit of skincare. Find the formula that is right for you!
Of course, the superstars don't solely rely on diet and supplements to look terrific. New technology is creating ways to keep young without going under the knife. People are seeking ways to maintain that youthful appearance minus the risks and downtime associated with plastic surgery.
Can you get better skin by sitting in front of your clock radio? Not really, but the LED lights that most clock radios contain are one of the newest forms of skin rejuvenation. Gentle Waves utilizes LED Photo modulation. This is the interaction of light delivered through Light Emitting Diodes to activate cells so that they produce more collagen. The treatment only needs to be done once a week for 8 to 10 sessions, and takes about 30 seconds. It's completely painless and needs no preparation or anesthesia. It's also not a quick fix. When finished with a Gentle Waves treatment, the skin will look the same as it did prior to the treatment, without redness or irritation. It takes at least 6 to 8 weeks for the skin to begin to produce more collagen, in order to see results. Dr. Harold Eisenman is a cosmetic dermatologist located in Boca Raton, FL who has been treating his patients with Gentle Waves. "Gentle Waves is a unique new technology in the form of laser mediated photo dynamic therapy, which offers advantages for skin rejuvenation not seen from non-ablative or ablative technology. It's extremely safe, non-painful, and patients get a beautiful glow to their complexion." says Eisenman.
There are also many new spa treatments to revitalize skin. Spa 415 located in Beverly Hills, CA, is a celebrity favorite. Stars such Tyra Banks and actress Gabrielle Union love the innovative therapies offered at Spa 415. One of the hottest new ones is Laser Collagen Rejuvenation. It's an exciting, painless procedure designed to encourage healthier looking skin and improve cosmetic flaws such as fine wrinkles, acne scars, aging, or sun-damage. This non-invasive laser treatment also reduces the noticeable vessels caused by telangiectasia (spider veins) and diffuses redness associated with rosacea. By delivering laser energy through the skin's surface to the deeper tissues, it gently stimulates the production of your own collagen, while protecting the outer layer. There is no downtime from redness or peeling. Spa 415 recommends a minimum of six sessions about two weeks apart.
Another treatment used by spas and physicians alike is the FotoFacial. A pulsed light treatment, the FotoFacial was developed by a dermatologist as a non-invasive method to improve skin without downtime. A non-laser medical device is used to deliver gentle pulses of light to the skin. FotoFacial can be beneficial in reducing fine lines, treating rosacea, decreasing pore size, and evening out skin tone. Boca Raton, FL-based plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Man is a proponent of the FotoFacial, which he uses in his medispa. Says Dr. Man, "FotoFacial is a great rejuvenator which takes just a few minutes. It improves redness, blemishes, and sun damaged skin, and can be used as a quick touch up during lunchtime. Our patients are very active and busy, so they like the fact that it is performed in less than 15-30 minutes, and that they can return to work and other activities right away. Their face feels fresher and they look better."
With so many options to choose from, it's not just celebrities who can reap the benefits of beautiful skin. Thanks to supplements, science, and some common sense, better looking skin is now available to everyone.

EASY TIPS
Tea Party: Hello, my name is Michelle, and I'm an herbal tea-aholic! I absolutely love herb teas and keep the pantry stocked with them at all times. One of my favorite brands is Teavana www.teavana.com. They make delicious and fresh loose leaf teas. The Rooibos Sweet Amore is just the thing to take the edge off of a hard day. For in-store teas, Republic of Tea is another brand I look for. Their "Get Gorgeous" herb tea tastes yummy and improves the skin.
Scents of Purpose: Essential oils not only have incredible fragrance, they also have therapeutic value. Aura Cacia (www.auracacia.com) has a wide variety of oils and diffusers to make any environment smell great, and help to lift your spirits. I even use them in my car with their plug-in car diffuser. Lavender will relax the body and mind. Eucalyptus clears the sinuses and aids mental clarity. Ylang ylang is a great way to beat the blues. In addition to being used in a diffuser, these oils can also be added to a carrier oil or shea butter for your own personalized massage oil or body moisturizer.
Hollywood Skin Secret: How do Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Julia Roberts keep their 30-something skin looking dewy and dreamy on the red carpet? For these lucky nominees/presenters at the People's Choice Awards, there's Prevage cream (www.prevage.com) — one of the hottest beauty items in the giveaway gift baskets this year. Each of these lovely ladies received a 2 oz bottle of the stuff, which claims to reduce wrinkles by 29% in six weeks.
Cellulite Solution: No self-respecting celebrity wants to be seen with dimpled thighs, so stars such as Cameron Diaz are turning to Vacuodermie. A non-invasive procedure done at medi-spas such as the Beverly Hills Spa 415 (www.spa415.com), it's taken Tinsel Town by storm. Gabrielle Union and Tyra Banks are also believers in the treatment, which uses suction cups to create a vacuum effect that stimulates circulation and helps eliminate toxins, reducing the look of cellulite. Inquire about it at a spa near you.
Exfoliate! Body scrubs, like The Body Bakery's (www.thebodybakery.com) Brown Sugar Body Scrub, slough off dead skin cells from the body, while also moisturizing with shea butter. The scrub has the delectable aroma of baked goods (that you literally are putting on your hips!) and makes skin silky smooth.
Moisturize! To keep facial skin in top shape, begin by cleansing, exfoliating toning and then finish with a good moisturizer. A rich body cream such as Bath and Body Works Mango Mandarin Body Butter (www.bathandbodyworks.com) will help to seal in moisture and provide a subtle fragrance. Reviva Lab's Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester & DMAE cream (www.vitaminshoppe.com) will provide antioxidants and help to firm skin and keep it glowing.
Bathing Beauty: A luxurious bath feels incredible on its own, or as a start to another treatment. I use all-natural products such as Aura Cacia's (www.auracacia.com) Mineral Bath Salts or Aromatherapy Foam Baths for a rejuvenating soak. Other natural products such Lush's Romancing The Stone or Dream On Bath Bombs are fun, fizzy, and smell great. (www.lush.com)
Take "Me" Time: Whether you're getting pampered at a five-star resort spa, or creating your own in-home spa experience, the most important first step is simply making the time to do it. Plan ahead, and when you can manage to get away from it all, in as little as a half hour, you can indulge in well-deserved spoiling and relaxation that we all need every so often.
Firm Believer: Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our bodies, and helps keep facial skin firm and supple by encouraging the skin to maintain optimal moisture levels. This is one of my staples because it always leaves my face glowing, and it's not animal-derived. Reviva Labs Hyaluronic Acid is my favorite. Sold at Vitamin Shoppe or www.vitaminshoppe.com
Draw The Line: Who needs Botox when you have Derma E's Vitamin A Retinyl Palmitate Wrinkle Treatment Creme? It's an all-natural way to increase cell renewal, promoting fresher, smoother skin with less fine lines and imperfections. Available at Vitamin Shoppe or www.vitaminshoppe.com
Hydration Heaven: The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Body Butter is a rich and creamy treat for your body and your senses. It fully quenches your thirsty skin for a full 24 hours, and has a refreshing yet light scent that you'll just love. Available at Body Shop locations or www.thebodyshop.com
A Spot Of Tea: Desert Essence Tea Tree Therapy Cleansing Bar smells amazingly fresh and invigorating. The tea tree oil is excellent for purifying, while jojoba oil and aloe soothe. Available at Vitamin Shoppe or www.vitaminshoppe.com
Sweet Skin Treat: I love the smell of vanilla! Kiss My Face's Vanilla Earth Moisture Shave keeps your legs smooth and soft with the help of olive and coconut oils, and will be your razor's very best friend. Not to mention, it smells divinely delicious! Visit www.kissmyface.com
Love Those Locks! Full body is extremely important for me when it comes to hair, and that's why I'm a fan of Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner by Aveda. Its plant based formula lifts the hair and makes it look fuller using all natural ingredients such as organic acacia gum, peppermint, ylang ylang, and jasmine. Available at Aveda salons or www.aveda.com.
Spa at Home - Bring elements found at the spa into your home: Plush towels in a beautiful basket, a fluffy organic cotton robe, and comfortable slippers will create a feeling of luxury every day. Soy candles can help create your spa look and ambience without breaking the bank. Little touches are what truly set the stage. Add fresh lemon, mint or cucumber to your mineral water at home. This will remind you of your favorite spa while helping you stay hydrated and feeling fresh.
